Invoices must travel via the Peppol network in EN 16931 formats

In forceformatEffective 2026-01-01

Belgium uses the Peppol 4-corner network. Invoices must follow the European standard EN 16931 (UBL 2.1 or CII). Two businesses may agree on another exchange channel, but only if it meets EN 16931 — and you must still be technically able to send and receive via Peppol regardless.

What to do

1
Check whether your accounting software includes a built-in Peppol access point (most Belgian tools now do)
2
Send a test invoice through Peppol to a willing customer or your accountant
3
Verify invoices you RECEIVE are structured too — paying on non-compliant invoices can create VAT deduction risk
Risk if ignored: Non-Peppol-capable = non-compliant, subject to the graduated fines.
